Removing patio and replacing with grass

i am removing my patio and wish to grass over the area can i put top soil and grass on top of the sharp sand and Scalpings that was under the slabs or should i dig it all out and then put top soil down

We don't know much about gardening at Diydoctor but we think 150mm of topsoil is the minimum needed to lay a lawn. Someone else may know better.

hi busa

i think i would tend to put topsoil directly onto the sand- reason, it will help with drainage and stop you getting a waterlogged lawn.
