replacement light switch has more connection points than old

by kathryn » Tue Aug 21, 2007 5:16 pm

I am trying to replace standard plastic light switch with smart steel one but old switch just had two connections for red and black whilst new one got three. Tried using L1 (red) and L2 (black)- nothing. Used L1(red) and L3(black) (remembering to earth switch) worked but on/off upside down - can't inverse switch as earth wont reach. Is it safe to simply swap the red and black round the other way - Red to L3 and Black to L1 - in other words does it matter which way round - Or am I just being plain stupid?

Hi won't make any difference it's justa make/break device like putting wires together/apart buy if you use C(L3) & L2 it will work opposite sense, ie same as inverting sw.

Thank you so much - I was pretty sure I should be ok - but my local sparky kept telling me to to use L1 and 2 - and I didnt fancy the "told you so woman" bit if I blew something up!
