Replacing Ceiling Mounted light

by Minty129 » Fri Nov 07, 2008 6:40 pm

I Am trying to replace a ceiling mounted light which had 3 lights on it with a new one with 4 lights.

When I took the old one out there were 3 mains wires fed into the old light.

Can I just fit one mains wire to the new light and close the other 2 off with tape or do I need to wire all 3 to the new unit ???

your help would be appreciated.

Kind Regards

I will guess feed into lamp, feed out to next lamp, and switch wire. And yes all required. The blacks or in newer installations the blues cause problems if not carefully noted likely two will be neutral and one will be switched feed to lamp. Also likely the reds or in newer installations browns connect together but do not connect to lamp.
There are diagrams in projects section which should help. Do make careful notes before disconnecting anything photos are good idea too as if you get neutral and switch wire mixed up then likely you are going to have to get electrician in to sort them out.
