Replacing spring in bathroom door handle

The spring in my bathroom door handle has broken. Fortunately I have a spare, but having struggled and somehow managed to get off the spring clip holds the assembly together, I can't find a way to get the spring clip back on! Does anyone have any tips on how to hold the clip open and put it back?

You need some circlip pliers for external circlips.
