Ring beam joints?

by barnacle bill » Thu Feb 18, 2010 3:00 pm

Hello all, this is my first post and i hope you can help.

I'm building a porch and have a 8x2 ring beam to take the roof above.
I have 2 oak posts offset from each corner and would like to know the best way to join the ring beam at the corners. Obviously i want the strongest possible corner as it will be taking the rafter.
I was thinking of a mortice and tenon or dovetail joint and then braced inside.
What do you think.

barnacle bill,
Assuming your 8x2s are with the 8 vertical I would suggest using coach bolts and toothed timber connectors.
