rotten arris rails

by pressie » Fri May 25, 2007 10:48 am

Hi, the arris rails on my fence (8ft lengths) have been attacked by some of wood boring insect as well as being rotten. The problem is they are between concrete posts. Is there a simple way to replace the arris rails without disturbing the posts?

thanks

You can usually "shapren" one of the ends of a rail so it slides into the post hole enough to get the other end in also. Then you can slide it back so both ends are in. You then need to pack the sharpened end. If this does not work with your posts then the rail can be cut in half and a timber dowel inserted to strengthen the join. If not a dowel, then a metal plate can be fixed to one, or both sides, of the arris.
