rust and rings on fireplace surround

:( Hello there

We have a lovely original cast iron fireplace in our dining room.
The surround is some kind of beaten metal, but not sure what, it has inset decorative carvings, so must be of soft origin.
The top obviously has had glasses left on it at some time and there are rings. Also it tends to show rust if any water spillage.

I realise it is difficult for the forum not knowing what the surround is made of, but any advice on cleaning of the marks would be welcome!
