Installing 4 70w SON lights, can anyone recommend a timer unit that is suitable for controlling this type of installation. Do I need to fit a contactor?

If you're just after the lights coming on during the hours of darkness, then the simplest method is to buy a Zodian type photocell.
These are the types that control normal street lighting.
You can also get SON fittings with a photo cell incorporated into each fitting, which may be the way to go, so if one photo cell packs in you are still left with the other lights working.
