Staircase Middle Support After Opening up for Understairs Loo

by Pass5 » Sat May 06, 2017 1:11 pm

Hi all, I opened up an underside of the staircase to increase headroom below with the plan to creat an understairs loo.

When I remove the cover (6mm ply), I discovered middle supprt circa 1" square running from the top to the bottom (see photos), but it stops shortly before the bottom 4 steps. Cover was nailed to it as well as to the sides.

I am not sure whether this plank supports the staircase or it is there just for the cover to be naild on. My plan is to remove it. Does anybody came across a similar thing? Any thoughts wheteher it is safe to remove?

Thank you
