Support wall under main staircase?

Post by max_174 » Mon Oct 04, 2010 8:37 am

Hello everyone totally inspired with all the projects on here it has to be said currently redesigning my large hallway and 1 project I would love to do is convert under my stiarcase. As it is there is a large open space underneath then next to this a decent sized cupboard both areas seperated by I would a 4 inch wall which doesnt sound very solid but how do I know if this is supporting my staircase or not? I basically want to remove this section and create 1 large free open space under the staircase without my house falling down! Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

max_174,
There's a good chance the wall is supporting the stairs. Get someone in who can investigate and if necessary suggest alternative support methods.

max_174,
Structural surveyor - best option but expensive
Architectural technician - less costly
Builder - use one recommended by friends, make clear its advice only
