Surface mount light switches

Post by GDL » Thu May 24, 2007 8:24 am

Hi,

As part of a house rewire I need to replace some lighting circuits.

The cables to be replaced are sunk into the wall but there is no conduit, the light switches are mounted on sunken boxes.

To minimise damage to the decoration (i.e. no wall chasing) I am planning to use surface mount conduit for the cables and surface mount boxes for the switch replacements. Ideally I want the new switches to be in the same location as the existing switches - is there a recommmended way of mounting surface boxes over existing sunken boxes?

Thanks,
Graham

Hi Graham,
don't know of official way but as hole will line up it means as you no doubt have discovered you can't easily do it,
a friend has just got over this by carefully drilling out the metel inserts in switch pattress box and used long screws right through into original lugs! it seems to have worked for him....
