The right mix?

Hi, can anyone tell me what additive I need to add to my mortar mix for cementing around a coal fire? I've been told to add vermiculite but this doesn't seem right.

Are you fitting a fire back?
If so yes vermiculite is ideal,or you could use sand&lime the reason for these are that if you used cement in your mix it will expand under heat and crack the fire back.

Thanks for your reply, I probably will fit a fire back but at the mo I'm just repointing etc. Do you mean the same vermiculite that I would use in the greenhouse for sewing fine seeds. Small flakes?

If you go to your local builders merchant they will supply you with the right stuff.
