Toilet cistern keeps making noises

Postby rob3rto » Fri Feb 20, 2009 2:02 pm

Dual flush toilet.

Let me elaborate.

For the last 3-4 months, the toilet had started to make noises. When I ran to it one day, found out that it had, all on its own, started to refill the cistern. No one had flushed it. This happened in 3-5 sec bursts once every week.

Lately, this has gone up to 2-3 times a day.

Took the lid off when flushing and the float always rises to the top properly, never sticks.

I can look for the make of the toilet/mechanism if that helps.

rob3rto,
Sounds like you have one of the modern plunger type flush units, if so take it out and give it a good clean.

OK,

model is a Fluidmaster 0224A

Looked real dirty so I got out a toothbrush (old one :D ) and used some APC on all the nasty looking bits.

Was like this before

Now all sparkly clean. Including the tube the float rides up and down on.

I'll wait and see if it makes a difference.

Can't find my model on Manu website though :?

rob3rto,
Looks like you have steel water main pipes and or steel pipes in your home. Did you clean out all the deposits in the lower part of the cistern? and have you cleaned both the flush and water supply valve mechanisms?

How can you tell I have steel pipes? No idea if I do or not.

Only cleaned ot the fill valve. Took it apart down to the seal and gave it all a good clean with an Orange based Alll Purpose Cleaner.

You reckon the flush system is the cause as it still has the symptoms?

rob3rto,
Presumably the unit used to work OK so try cleaning the flush mechanism espaecially around the seal.
