best way to grout

what is the best technque for grouting without making a mess of the tiles obviously its best to remove as much grout of the tiles before it dries but what is the best way without messing up the grout itself

also should the grout be brought up flush with the tile!!!

Wipe the grout vertically and horizontally with a wetish sponge so that you have a thin film of grout over the tiles, that can be polishes off with a dry cloth.
A circular motion may be best initially.
Usually the grout sits slightly below the tile face.
Do not leave any large amounts of grout when wet. Grout will not damage the tiles in a thin film and is better removed dry.

so basically what your saying is to grout with a sponge and not a rubber trowel....????

You can apply the grout with a rubber float to force it well into the joints, but I would still wipe of with a sponge.
The grout will find its own level slightly below the surface of the tiles.

I've always found the slight extra work of using a grout profiler (or just a finger) to give an even finish to the profile worth the work.

When you are wiping with a sponge be carefull not to follow the line of the grout or the sponge can pull the grout out of the joint.

i have done quite a few tiling jobs but always struggled with th finishing grout part so this time i tried using your advice with excellent results and alot of time saved
