[size=18]I am replacing the light in the kitchen with a halogen 4 bulb light. The problem is I have an extra black wire. there is one black with a red sleeve over it, I guess live feed to brown wire. a Earth wire but three black wire,,,Why do you think this is? any help appreciated please

someone has been nice to you and identified the switch live for you, thats the black with the red sleeve. this goes to the brown wire on your new light fitting. the blacks are neutrals and go with the neutral on your light (which will be blue - new colours). All the earths naturally go together
If the new fitting is metal it must be earthed unless it is a class 2 fitting (some metal fittings are - check the manufacturers instructions) You may struggle to fit all this in the new fitting. sometimes you can push the connections up into the ceiling to give your slef a bit more space, and if you used choccieblocks wrap them in tape to stop any stray stuff getting in the ends

Read the instructions that came with the unit? Alternatively what fitting is it?

There should be 2 reds (lives) in a block somewhere, proberly stuffed up in the ceiling
