I am looking to build another storey on top of my existing garage. I know I will need to check the foundations and have them approved by a buildign inspector but how do I do this and what is the best type of tradesperson to enlist?

There is no simple answer to this.
They type of foundations required have to take into consideration........ the type of ground, soft, hard, rock what ever.
The type of building, its weight, its exposure.
Go see your Council, explain what you want to do, let them advise, they will tell you what you need to do, basically if the existing foundation is good enough?
