Does anybody know if there are any restrictions on how close my neighbours can build to my property? We both live in detached houses. Mine butts up against the dividing line in the land, and they have a driveway at the side between their house and mine. Their planned extension would come to within around five or six inches of the side of my house. In principle it wouldn't worry me too much, as I have no windows in this side of the house, but I am concerned that I will no longer be able to maintain the side of my building, which is 140 years old, of solid stone construction, and in need of constant attention! I was under the impression that sufficient space would need to be left to at least allow access for maintenence... Any advice would be much appreciated.

Talk to your council.
Unfortunately many detached houses have been built very close to each other, this has been going on for hundreds of years and is still happening on modern estates.

I wouldn't both with the council - it's a civil matter - nothing to do with the council. It's dealt with under the Party Wall Act and you need to advice of a party wall surveyor
