Water Hammering after water heater install

by chow01 » Wed Mar 09, 2011 6:18 am

We replaced our water heater a week and a half ago. As the days went by the water hammering at ALL or any tap has gotten worse.

We've already run ALL the taps at the same time and have done that 3 times now. And still bad.

We finally called the plumber back and even he is baffled!!!!

All the main floor taps have been replaced 7 years ago. The basement tapes only a year ago.

THe hammering only occurs when the hot water is turned on. If we turn the cold on, there is not a problem.

THe plumber left baffled with no solution except that the city must be doing water main work in our area...which they are not.

He checked if the the original installer potentially hooked up the hot and cold backwards but no. He checked the water meter.

One of the times we had all the taps on in hopes of getting rid of the air, we left the hot water running long enough to use up all the hot water so that the tank was filled with cold again. We found, after the tubs had drained, the bottom of the tubs were covered in black sediment!!!! Quite alarming!!!

Now the plumber has left, after he did his so called purge of the air (which by the way didn't help) and the cold water pipe into the water heater is now hot about a foot above the water heater.

Ok I'm really concerned now. Can anyone tell me what's wrong?
Faulty water heater?
THanks for your replies.
