Watt Bulb?

by Scoot » Tue Feb 16, 2010 2:48 pm

i have a double gang dimmer switch rated a 200 watt per gang.I am after a mains fed downlighter rated at less than 20watt as i have 12 dowlighters off of one gang so need to reduce the wattage.I dont want to change my switch but am after a solution to the lights. Are LEDs worth considering......

I have not seen dimmable LED lighting. Or cold cathode lighting when so small. OK can be done but norm is to have two switches 1/3 on one switch and 2/3 on other so giving 3 levels of lighting.
Quartz lamps should not be dimmed. Yes you can but really shortens their life. Whole idea of quartz is to run at very high temperature and dimming stops this so active material is deposited on quartz which goes black and fails.
A small reduction as used with projectors is OK but not sort of reduction that a standard dimmer switch will produce.
