Whats the best choice of timber for making sliding gates?

by overlander » Fri Jan 01, 2010 10:32 am

Happy New Year,

I intend to build two sliding gates for vehicle access and two smaller personnel gates. I have already made one of the personnel gates from softwood but as soon as it started to rain the timber expanded and split. Admittedly my mortice and tenons were way to wide and that is where the split happened.

Am I right to take it that hardwood doesnt expand as much as softwood? If i had a hardwood frame with a softwood panel relief how much expansion gap should be leaft between the two? What type of timber would you recommend for gates in a climate that rarely rains and rarely drops below 20 celcius? Im still a novice regarding carpentry so im thinking of something relatively easy to work.

Defining the scope of outdoor furniture, this article aims at providing you with information on different types of furniture units for outdoor areas—patio lounge chair s, sofas, patio furniture sets, outdoor wicker furniture, teak garden furniture and others. The garden furniture that you choose can set the tone for your outdoor space in the same way that your choice of sofa, chairs and tables defines the style of your living room.

On garden furniture, when choosing any piece, analyze the kind of usage the furniture will have in your garden. If the area is moderate and relaxation on summer days and lazy evenings sounds like your lifestyle, look for furniture that matches the theme. Perhaps, garden is a place where you'll read and have breakfasts or teas, away from the buzz of gadgets looking into the greens, try including a garden hammock in your list. Then there is classic teak garden furniture—dining tables, chairs and metal swings for kids that are equally appealing. Having a small table on hands to hold your tea is also a great idea. For children, you may consider having a play time table that can be turned into a dining table when needed. Outdoor umbrellas are great to pull your hat down and snooze under the sun.

A pair of great sun loungers with cushions is as much a treat for you as any of your guests. If you regularly entertain guests and hold pool side parties, try buying loungers in robust material. There are chaise loungers available in many a sundry material that can turn any hour of the day into fun time all year round. You also get park benches in stone, wrought iron and natural material that make great spots in a garden.

Patio furniture Sets are available at many locations, as also can be purchased from reliable internet furniture stores, and the variety of pieces and modern material available is extensive. There is such a wide range of patio furniture these days that utilize a number of different materials. More and more, you can find patio furniture that will use a few different types of materials or materials that are not listed here, however the most common types of furniture that you will find are:

Rattan or Outdoor wicker furniture

As commonly understood, wicker is the weaving process, and not the material used. The best thing about wicker is that it can be cleaned with ease. You can vacuum clean the dirt, whereas the spills can be wiped up with a clean cloth and mild detergent. Humidity level is important in determining the care of these pieces. It may not be a great idea to opt for wicker in places where the weather is humid and the air is too dry. However, you get highly tensile synthetic fiber that is elastic and waterproof, like Jalan fiber. It reduces the maintenance time.

Teak furniture

Teak is an all-season wood with naturally impregnating oils that protect the surface from weathering. The natural looks of teak can be easily blended with the greens and it looks gorgeous in patios, open spaces and gardens. You get loungers, chaises, sofas, tables and chairs in different finishes to compliment different outdoor settings. However, teak requires some regular maintenance like polishing the surface with teak oil to keep the furniture shining.

Metal furniture: Aluminum or Wrought iron

Outdoor metal furniture consists of mostly aluminium pieces and wrought iron furniture. Garden aluminium furniture is light and easy to move around. However, windy areas are not so ideal for aluminium; also it requires regular maintenance. A wrought iron dining table and chairs in white is a popular outdoor scenario, and it does add a touch of elegance to a patio/garden. Then there are benches and folding metal chairs that come in handy outdoors. Metal too requires routine cleaning and painting.

Plastic furniture

Plastic furniture is not so popular in the West, but you get furniture in molded PVC furniture as a popular choice, in colors that harmonize with natural surroundings. High quality fiber or plastic furniture make inexpensive furniture outdoors and can be painted in any desired color. However the life of plastic furniture may not be at par with metal, wood or wicker furniture.
