Which is the best paint for exterior metal?

Post by McBurnie » Tue Jun 23, 2009 1:38 am

Hi everyone, I'm off to Spain to paint metal gates and security grills of windows and doors that are showing areas of rust. I would like to use a good quality paint such as Hammerite, although I know there is a cheaper Spanish alternative that is supposed to be good. Can anyone advise me if Hammerite is the best or has anyone any experience of other paints.
Of course, the most important part of painting will be in preparation, which I intend to do.
Any advice and help will be gladly appreciated.

I have just finished painting my wrought iron gates and fences and having used hammerite before have had to paint them every year or so. This year I have tried a paint I bought from a wrought iron factory it goes on like tar and looks terrible at first but then smoothes out and looks brilliant. If it does what it says on the tin it should last for 5 years plus. So if you can find a wrought iron place close to you go there.
