Wiring help...

by sturobinson81 » Sat Aug 09, 2008 1:36 pm

Probably easy, but i'd rather be safe than sorry...

How do i wire the following dimmer switch to my light socket?

Do i need to buy earth wire or do i use the wire attached in the socket?

what do the L1 L2 and wave with arrow through symbols mean?

L1 AND L2 ARE SWITCH WIRES.
Wave symbol is usually the common terminal where
permanent live is connected.
your earth wire would connect to earth terminal of dimmer , and a earth from here to bond metal box if dimmer is class1
rated ( metalclad accessorie )
for connections it would be of most benifit to u to look at
docs project section on wiring switches.

Job done.

I just left L2 alone, and used the common (wave with arrow) and L1.
I then bought some earthing wire with green/yellow covering to go from the dimmer switch earth terminal to the earth terminal in the light switch back box...

It didnt work at first... but it was because i had an energy saving bulb in... So i've got a normal bulb in at the moment, until i get the new lights fitted.

I will guess this is a pull/push off/on and turn to dim. If that is correct one red wire goes to ~ and the other to L1 if you use L2 instead of L1 it will reverse pull on to push on. The earth would normally be connected direct to switch but even if not it will still connect through the 3.5mm screws and swapping red wires will make no difference in this case where used as a one way switch.
