Wiring through decorative ceiling rose

Hi,

I have purchased a lightweight (not plaster), decorative ceiling rose to replace the original plastic, pendant light fitting. Can I just remove the old plastic pendant covering (screw on), whilst leaving the base in situ, drill a hole through the new rose for the cable and thus using the new rose as a covering for the old base?
