Wooden kitchen worktop

by leerut » Tue Jul 17, 2007 7:26 am

I have just had a wooden kitchen worktop fitted 10 days ago. i followed the instructions of the fitter and stained it with an approved product. i gave it a total of 7 coates, waiting 24 hours between each one.
I have now started to use the kitchen. We are getting a black stain (like small specks) emerging around the sink area. It started off small but now is spreading very quickly. We are very worried. The Kitchen firm are not being helpful at the moment.

Can anyone advise? I am presuming the water is causing this stain, but is not that the reason why we treated the worktop in the first place.

Many thanks. :?:

Hi, What is the wood, and what did you treat it with? Did you use wire wool on it by any chance?

Just discovered that my wife did sand it with wire wool.

Whoops. Wire wool sheds fibres which embed in the surface. It’s probably these rusting and staining the wood.

Short of re-finishing the top I don’t know a way to deal with this. You can get a lot of the fibres out with a strong magnet before the first coat but after 7 coats I’m not so sure.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

(Incidentally, never use wire wool on oak, it stains even without water. Second tip is to use plastic pad abrasives instead wherever wire wool is mentioned.)
