Summary: All the help you will need in planning a trip, break or holiday in Australia
Australia is a country of a great many extremes. It has croplands located towards the base of the country, deserts in the centre, rainforests towards the north and snow fields around the southeast and is also one of the driest continents on the planet despite the fact that nearly one third of the country exists in the tropics.
The country itself is made up of eight states and territories, the Capital Territory, New South Wales, Northern Territory, Queensland, South Australia,
Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia.
The majority of the country is largely uninhabited with more than seventy percent of the population existing in the largest cities, most of which are concentrated to the east and southeast of the country, which also make it one of the most urban-orientated counties in the world.
Due to its size and extremes there are a great many things to do and see. Treks and rainforest tours, skiing, snow boarding, tobogganing and that's not even mentioning the 36735Km of coastline featuring some of the best beaches in the world that also make the country a very popular destination for backpackers and gap year travelers.
Culturally the country is now as diverse as a great many other western countries. The continents original inhabitants, the Aboriginies and the Torres Strait Islander people now total just over 300000 and make up just under one and a half percent of the total population.
In recent years many Europeans have settled in the country and more recently many from Asia. Australia's cultural diversity is also reflected in its cuisine with a huge and varied variety of restaurants and foods on offer.
Australia spans a number of time zones and in some cases this can cause communication issues between the east and the west of the country. The west of the country is roughly eight hours ahead of GMT and the east is roughly ten hours ahead.
In terms of weather, as the country lies in the Southern Hemisphere, its seasons are the opposite to ours here in the UK. Summer runs from December to February, Autumn from March to May, Winter, from June to August and Spring from September to November and there are also the different types of season within the different areas of the country: the wet and dry seasons within the countries tropical regions for example!
From skiing in the south east to surfing in the north, regardless of your holiday requirements you will be guaranteed to find what you want in Australia.
