Summary: All the help you will need in planning a trip, break or holiday in Austria
A country of startling contrasts, Austria is famed for many reasons. Roughly the size of Scotland, Austria is landlocked, and shares its borders to the North with Germany, the Czech Republic, and the Slovak Republic, to the South with Italy and Slovenia. Switzerland and Liechenstein lie to the West and Hungary to the East.
The Alps run through Austria from the west to the Danube basin in the east. With almost half the country covered by dense forest, it is a country not only famous as one of the world’s premier skiing regions, but also for its breathtaking scenery, magnificent mountains and established hiking trails. Meadowlands are dotted about the gently sloping foothills of the Alps down towards the River Danube which flows eastwards from the Black Forest in Germany, approximately 360km (220 miles) through Austria, towards the Black Sea.
In addition to natural beauty, the country contains numerous and glorious historical buildings, world-class museums, galleries and architectural riches. The capital, Vienna, has the truly magnificent Opera House and the former imperial residence of the Hofburg. Austria’s other cities are similarly crammed with historical magic. Salzburg, the birthplace of Mozart, has stunning baroque churches, set before a backdrop of dramatic snow-covered peaks; and Innsbruck, in the centre of the Austrian Alps.
However, Austria is not behind the times, In terms of gourmet culture, the legendary Gemütlichkeit (a relaxed enjoyment of life) is evident in the cafes where coffee-drinking has been raised to a high art. Many Heurigen have the latest vintages which are accompanied by vast quantities of food. The Nightlife is varied, offering something for everyone – from laid-back taverns, beer gardens and excellent après-ski, to trendy clubs and dance venues to take you through to the small hours.
The Alps, which take up approximately 60% of the country’s surface area, make Austria one of Europe’s major destinations for winter sports: skiing, snowboarding, tobogganing, sleigh rides, curling or skating are all available and with great facilities.
Hiking and walking through the Alps’ varied landscapes, are both catered for. For gentle strolls through alpine meadows, the Vorarlberg area is well suited, or for the more experienced, why not try the Hohe Tauern National Park which is popular for more demanding trekking. Detailed walking maps can be obtained either from the Austrian National Tourist Office or from the local tourist offices. You can climb the peaks of the Alps; and for the very adventurous, combine this with a spot of hang-gliding!
Visitors in search of culture or those exploring the wonderful scenery are spoilt for choice.
