Summary: All the help you will need in planning a trip, break or holiday in the Azures
Situated 1,000 miles off the coast of Portugal in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, and almost halfway between Lisbon and New York, the islands of The Azores have some of Europe’s most beautiful natural landscape and coastlines. Made up of nine islands, there are great variations in the size; Sao Miguel is the biggest with 747 km sq and Corvo is the smallest with only 17 km sq. The total area is about 2.333 km2.
The Azores have everything: from lush forests, volcanic peaks, stunning lakes and sandy beaches.
A visit to the Azores can be an adventure fuelled trip or a get away from it all, relaxing break in the sun. Activities such as hang-gliding, abseiling and caving are all on offer along with snorkeling, diving, sea fishing and even whale watching.
Mass tourism has yet to reach The Azores, although with an information office on most of the islands, the tourist is well catered for. Please note that tourist offices on all islands are closed on week-ends and holidays.
The Climate is generally mild and most places sunny. Each island has its own unique climate, and the humidity on some can be high.
The best time of the year to visit Azores is between June and September. The temperature is pleasant, and at this time of year many different flowers are in bloom.
