Summary: All the help you will need in planning a trip, break or holiday in the Bahamas
The Bahamas is a giant archipelago, made up of over 700 islands over an area twice the size of Spain. Taking its name from the Spanish baja mar, which means ‘shallow sea’, it’s actually found in the Atlantic Ocean, though many people believe it is part of the Caribbean. This is just one of the many quirky facts about The Bahamas, and underlines why both geographically and culturally the country is extremely popular. Characterised by the same mellow Caribbean idea of ‘island time’, and it isn’t hard to understand why countless visitors and residents alike enjoy the laid back, relaxed way of life.
Many of the islands are uninhabited or sparsely populated, but there is enough diversity to suit everyone’s tastes. Water sports dominate, from diving amidst shipwrecks and coral reefs, to windsurfing, parasailing or fishing. For the more adventurous diver, you can even dive with sharks off Long Island. Or maybe you prefer the gentler option of swimming with dolphins in the clear warm waters at Blue Lagoon Island.
You can try your hand at Sailing - maybe around the Exumas, whose pristine cays and spectacular reefs abound with outstanding marine life.
There is plenty to do both on and under the beautiful turquoise waters that surround The Bahamas.
A shopping excursion in the bustling markets such as the straw market in Nassau is a must. You can haggle with local vendors who will create unique straw goods on the spot. For the more sophisticated shops Bay Street is the place to go.
The Bahamas' oldest golf course can be found at Cable Beach, or why not try one of the other five world-class courses on Grand Bahama Island. Golfer Greg Norman designed the course on Exuma, and the Abaco Club boasts a Scottish links-style course.
The Bahamas is the perfect location to get married : on one of the many beaches, in a church, aboard a yacht, amidst tropical gardens or even wearing full scuba gear underwater!
The Bahamas is associated with luxury, and attracts visitors from all walks of life to its shores. From exclusive villas and hotel complexes to Guest Houses or self catering apartments and cottages, there is something to suit all budgets.
For the culturally minded, visit New Providence Island where you can see 18th-century forts and pastel-coloured Georgian architecture, or discover Bahamian history and culture at the Pompey Museum or Junkanoo Museum.
From empty beaches strewn with seashells, to the busy capital of Nassau there is plenty to see and do throughout the islands.
