Summary: All the help you will need in planning a trip, break or holiday in Barbados
Barbados is the last and most eastern island of the Caribbean and lies around 1600 miles southeast from the coast of Florida.
With an area of about 430 square kilometres (166 sq miles), Barbados is similar in size to the Isle of Wight. The coastline measures approx 97 kilometres (60 miles) and can offer its visitors any number of water sports and beach activities. Whether you prefer the wilder crashing waves on the East Atlantic coast, or the gentler waters the West coast offers, the dramatic differences between the east and west coast could not be greater.
Barbados is flatter than some of its more volcanic neighbours, with the highest point near the centre of the island. Mount Hillaby rises 1100 feet and can be found near the middle of the island slightly west of the fantastic Scotland district. This area makes up around a sixth of the island and extends to the Atlantic Ocean to the northeast. With its spectacular rock formations the scenery here is truly breathtaking.
The east side of the island on the Atlantic coastline is quieter, with near empty beaches. This area can be enjoyed on one of the popular Safari Tours, or why not try the drive along the East Coast Road which follows the coastline before taking you through miles of sugar cane fields. Guided hikes are available through the Barbados National Trust. These free hikes cover distances of 5 to 14 miles and last around 3 hours. Moonlit walks can also be arranged.
The South and west coasts have the best conditions for windsurfing, parasailing, jet skiing and water-skiing. The Soup Bowl, South Point and Rockley Beach are all great places for surfing. The smaller waves off the beautiful pink sand of Crane Beach are perfect for body surfing or just having a lazy swim or paddle with the youngsters. There is always a lifeguard on duty in the day.
The many coral reefs are home to a myriad of marine life and are excellent for diving and snorkelling. Among the reefs and shipwrecks you are likely to find Sea horses, giant sand eels and hawksbill turtles. For those who prefer to be on rather than below the waves, Charter boats can be hired for game fishing and inshore fishing.
For a small island, Barbados has no shortage of activities to keep you busy. Whether you prefer to explore the enormous caves or flower forests, ride along the beach at sunset, or just indulge in lazy days on one of the many beaches, there is something to suit every taste.
