Summary: A Look at Some of Britain's Beauty spots - Lake Buttermere in Cumbria

Beautiful Britain - Lake Buttermere

Located in the Lake District at the foot of Honister Pass, Lake Buttermere is perhaps one of the most alluring and easily accessible of the lakes. Buttermere is just 1½ miles long by ¾ mile wide and the classic combination of water and mountains has been popular with visitors since the beginning of tourism in the Lake District.

Buttermere means ‘the lake by the dairy pasture’.

Buttermere is one of the few lakes with a path that runs all the way round and offers some of the best walking country in the Lake District. The perimeter of the lake can be walked in around 2 - 3 hours at a leisurely pace, making it the perfect introduction to the beauties of Lakeland. From this footpath you can also take a detour and walk to the summits of Haystacks and Red Pike. You can enjoy refreshments at Dalesgarth Farm and towards the end of your walk at Skye Farm, where you can also try locally made ice cream.

The village of Buttermere is located between the Lake and another body of water called Crummock Water. This lovely village is also a popular tourist attraction, and there are plenty of opportunities to rest, eat and stay. Crummock Water and Lake Buttermere were once a single lake, and are now separated by a fertile green plain which provides an interesting contrast to the surrounding mountains and waterfalls.

Above the village of Buttermere, in the little Church of St James, there is a memorial stone to Alfred Wainwright, the famous walker and author of many guidebooks of the Lake District, set into the windowsill overlooking Haystacks. It was here following his death in 1991 that his ashes were scattered, as Haystacks was his favourite place to walk.

Cumbria, S & W from Keswick from Honister Pass, or East from Cockermouth.
