Summary: A Look at Some of Britain's Beauty spots - Hatfield House in Hertfordshire
Located in Hertfordshire, and just 21 miles from London, Hatfield House is a fine example of a Jacobean House surrounded by parklands. Built by Robert Cecil, the house was completed in 1611, adjoining the older Royal Palace of Hatfield. Hatfield House has been in the Cecil family for over 400 years, and is now the home of the 7th Marquess of Salisbury.
The Old Palace was owned by Henry VIII, and was used as home for his children Edward, Elizabeth and Mary. Steeped in history, Elizabeth I spent much of her childhood here, and was her favourite residence. It was whilst taking a walk in the grounds that the young Elizabeth learned of her accession to the Throne in 1558. The actual spot in the surrounding parklands is marked by an oak tree.
Only part of the Old Palace still exists, a short distance away from the main house. The interior of the Old Palace can only been seen from the viewing bay in the central tower. However, this is not always open so it is advisable to check if this is of particular interest.
Used for entertaining the Royal Court, Hatfield House has some excellent examples of Jacobean craftsmanship such as the Grand Staircase and the stained glass window in the private chapel. The State rooms house many important paintings, furniture, tapestries and armour, including the "Ermine Portrait" of Elizabeth I by Nicholas Hilliard hanging in the Marble Hall.
Popular with tourists because the many objects associated with Queen Elizabeth, the State Rooms are open to the public to enjoy, either on their own or on one of the guided tours. The library displays a 22' long illuminated parchment roll showing the pedigree of Queen Elizabeth with ancestors back to Adam and Eve. Other artefacts include some gloves and a pair of silk stockings worn by Elizabeth that are believed to have been the first in England.
Visitors today can enjoy the extensive grounds and view the famous Knot Garden adjoining the Old Palace. There are woodland trails, a play area for younger visitors with plenty of space to run around and let off steam! Picnic tables are provided for that al fresco family picnic lunch, or the Courtyard Restaurant also serves a wide variety of food.
Hatfield House is occasionally used for filming, and is not open all year round. It is therefore advisable to check opening dates and times before travelling. For visitor information, Contact the House Office on: 01707 287010.
