Summary: All the help you will need in planning a trip, break or holiday in Brazil
Brazil is the fifth largest country in the world, and is almost as big as the whole of Europe. It is South America's biggest and most influential country and takes up almost half the continent. Most of Brazil lies south of the equator, and borders most of the other countries in South America.
Brazil is divided into five regions, drawn around state lines, but they also follow natural borderlines.
With a long Atlantic coastline, there are many thousands of beaches to choose from.
To the North is the gateway to the Amazon rain forest the world's largest biological reserve. It is said to contain one-third of all living species on the earth, many of which have yet to be catalogued. The Amazon basin is crossed by 10 of the world's 20 largest rivers, including of course the River Amazon. Eco-tourism is very popular; the most sought-after tours include a visit to the Reserve of Mamiraua and Humaita. The tours include boat rides, overnight stays at forest lodges and hikes through the forest itself. The tours vary from two to six days in duration, and all have a specialised guide. The usual base for trips is Manaus, the capital city of the region.
Considered by many to have the most beautiful coastline, The Northeast is the sunniest and hottest of Brazilian regions. Long periods of drought have caused crop losses for the mainly agricultural inland areas, making it one of the poorest regions. The climate provides almost year-round opportunities for beach-going and other outdoor activities. Always popular with Brazilian holiday makers, the growing tourist infrastructure has meant the Northeast has also become increasingly popular with European travellers.
Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro in the Southeast are the largest cities of the country and its economic and industrial heart. Famous for its annual carnival in Rio de Janeiro, carnival is celebrated throughout Brazil. Salvador also hosts a big carnival event, whereas the celebrations in Olinda are the most authentic and traditional. Once the centre of Brazil's slave trade, Olinda is one of Brazil’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
No trip to Rio de Janeiro would be complete without a visit to take the railroad to the top of Corcovado (Hunchback) mountain to enjoy one of the most beautiful views in the world from under the arms of the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue.
The world famous beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema are in Rio de Janeiro. Beach soccer and volleyball are played here, along side the sun worshippers who prefer a less energetic way to spend the day topping up their golden tans.
For the adrenalin junkie, there is hang gliding and tandem paragliding available from Pedro Bonita in Sao Conrado. Located just outside Rio, these popular flights will afford a bird’s eye view of Rio and its surrounding shanty towns, before gliding over the Atlantic forest to land on the golden sands of Sao Conrado beach.
The South has the best standards of living in Brazil with only two large cities and several mid-size cities with very low crime rates.
It is a land of valleys and pampas and is also the only region in Brazil where it snows every year, mainly in the central mountains of Santa Catarina State.
Home to one of the great natural wonders of the world, the Iguacu Falls are situated near the border of Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina. The Iguacu Falls are an awesome sight as tons of water rush over cliffs and the mist from the spray rises over the jungle. They are taller than Niagara Falls, and twice as wide. It is well worth spending a day on each side of the falls. This area is also on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Brazil is a country of great diversity, from the bustling urban mix of the different cities, to the untouched wilderness of the Amazon rainforest and world-class landmarks such as the Iguacu Falls, there is plenty to see and to do in Brazil beyond the carnival.
