Summary: Camping and Caravanning is making a comeback. Read our overview below.
If the thought of spending your well earned holiday under canvas fills you with horror, then this section may surprise you! Gone are the days when cold showers and dodgy toilet facilities were the norm, modern camping and caravan sites offer many of the things we take for granted in our everyday lives, and much more besides!
Fully serviced ‘super’ pitches have sprung up in many areas in response to growing demand for better facilities. Fresh and waste water points, laundry rooms, electricity hook ups even satellite TV connection are now commonly found on all types of sites, together with toilet and washrooms to rival even some hotels. Add in on site entertainment, sporting and leisure facilities, organized activities and swimming pools, it is perfectly feasible to spend your whole holiday break on site. Plus with the freedom to move onto another location when it suits, it is easy to understand why camping and caravanning is experiencing something of a renaissance.
For the purist, there are still plenty of the more traditional, rural sites to be found. These tend to be smaller by definition, not only in number of pitches available, but also in the facilities on offer. Although the days of pitching in a field when the fancy took you are perhaps gone, many farmers are not adverse to the occasional tent for an overnight stop – just make sure you get permission! Some more forward looking farmers and land owners have cottoned on to the growing trend of ‘real camping’ – that is those campers who prefer to leave all the trappings of the modern world behind. There are also many more ‘ready to go’ camping sites appearing around the countryside too. From tipis to yurts or family style tents, the choice is increasing as more people focus on holidaying at home.
One of the most obvious things is the freedom to travel around the country making your holiday a multi centre break. Spending a couple of days on different sites is a great way of doing this; you are limited only to your imagination and transport! However, it is worth mentioning that some of the more popular sites are likely to get booked up early, so a degree of forward planning is useful unless you are happy to risk having to move around until you find somewhere with space to pitch for a night or two.
If you are travelling further afield, the journey itself can become a holiday! Break up your journey at sites along the way – a good tip to avoid driving whilst tired and to stop the children getting bored!
