Summary: All the help you will need in planning a trip, break or holiday in Canada
Canada is the largest country in North America, and the second only to Russia in the world. With an area of 3,481,753 sq miles or 9,017,699 sq km its only land border is also the longest in the world and is shared with the United States. The US border is situated at Canada's Southern edge, as well as a shorter one with Alaska in the Northwest.
Canada is one of the world’s richest countries and is a major tourist destination. Renowned worldwide for it’s vast, untouched and beautiful landscapes, few countries offer such a wide range of activities to visitors.
Spanning six times zones, and bordering three of the world’s four oceans, Canada is divided into ten provinces and 3 territories:
British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador The 3 territories are the Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut.
The landscape ranges from Arctic tundra to the north to the great plains of the central area. The awe inspiring Rocky Mountains lie to the West, and to the southeast are the Great Lakes, the St Lawrence River and Niagara Falls.
If time allows, try a drive along the world’s longest road - The Trans-Canada Highway stretches 4,860 miles between Victoria in British Columbia and St. John's Newfoundland. Or why not let the train take the strain! Crossing the width of the country, the VIA Rail train network comes with spectacular scenery on all sides.
If your passion is for Winter Sports such as snow-boarding, ski-ing or ice-walking and sailing, Canada must be top of the list of destinations. Mountaineering and hiking at any time of year through the forests and prairies is recommended to appreciate the changes brought by the ever changing seasons. Canada still offers a true wilderness where all manner of wildlife can be seen, brown and black bears, grizzlies and the huge herds of moose, elk and caribou. If you are lucky, even wolves! Whale watching off the coast of British Columbia is popular where orca, minke and killer whales can be seen at certain times of the year. Humpback, beluga and pilot whales can be found off the Atlantic side.
Canada will show it is much more than Mounties and maple leaves.
