Summary: If you are travelling to either Tenerife, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Gomera, Hierro or La Palma find all you need to know here.
Located in the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of North West Africa, the Canary Islands are Spain’s farthest outpost. With a year round average temperature of 23°C and almost no summer rainfall, it is not hard to imagine why these islands are popular with holidaymaker's as a year round destination.
Tenerife is the largest of the group, and is home to Spain’s highest mountain, Mount Teide. Separated by the mountain, the island has two distinct climates. The North is much cooler and lusher, whilst the south is more desert like. Despite the lack of golden sandy beaches (they are either shingle or dark volcanic sand), sunbathing is the main pastime, although the capital, Santa Cruz, has more than it’s fair share of historical sights.
Fuerteventura, the second largest in the group has some of the best beaches of the islands. Corralejo on the eastern side and to the south, the Jandia peninsula are particularly good.
Gran Canaria has some wonderful beaches one of which, Maspalomas, is almost 6kms long. The capital, Las Palmas, has many interesting shops, and plenty of good restaurants and bars. The Cathedral of Santa Ana in the Old Town is worth a visit for the impressive architecture.
Lanzarote is the most easterly of the islands, with a landscape reflecting its volcanic history. Guanapay Castle is set in a volcanic cone, and Los Verdes has an enormous volcanic cave that is over 6kms long.
The smaller and perhaps less well known islands of La Palma, La Gomera and
El Hierro are accessible by boat, and are a haven for nature lovers or those who prefer a quieter walking holiday.
