Summary: All the help you will need in planning a trip, break or holiday in southern Cyprus
SOUTHERN CYPRUS
Cyprus is an island in the Mediterranean Sea, just of the south coast of Turkey and close to the Middle East. Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, after Sardinia and Sicily, with a total area of 3,572 sq miles (9,251 sq km) of which 3,355 sq km are in the North Turkish Cypriot area.
Although the borders between the two halves of the island are open, the two regions are separate from a traveler's point of view. This article will concentrate on the southern half known as the Republic of Cyprus. This is not a political endorsement of claims by either side in the dispute.

Cyprus has both rugged coastlines, and clean sandy beaches, rocky hills and forest-covered mountains. The Troodos Mountains in the centre of the island rise to almost 6,400 ft (1,952m) and provide skiing during the winter. At certain times of year it is possible to do both skiing and water skiing on the same day! Between the Troodos and the range of hills which run eastward virtually all along the north coast to the ‘panhandle' is the fertile Messaoria Plain.
There are many nature trails for hiking through the hilly areas around the Troodos mountains, or forest trails near Limassol, situated towards the south coast.
The coastline around Cape Greko is perfect for snorkelling and scuba-diving, and has many rocky coves and small sandy beaches for leisurely explorations by boat.
Windsurfing swimming and paragliding are popular in the Larnaca and Limassol areas. Many new resorts are springing up to accommodate visitors to the growing number of golf courses.
For those seeking a livelier way to spend their time, Ayia Napa along the south coast is famous for its clubbing and nightlife.
Cyprus is an enjoyable year round destination, popular with families for its beautiful beaches and child friendly attitude. The best family resorts around Protaras have good beaches, plenty of cafes and beach bars making them ideal for those with children.
