Summary: All the help you will need in planning a trip, break or holiday in northern Cyprus
NORTHERN CYPRUS
Cyprus is an island in the Mediterranean Sea, just of the south coast of Turkey and close to the Middle East. Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, after Sardinia and Sicily, with a total area of 3,572 sq miles (9,251 sq km) of which 3,355 sq km are in the North Turkish Cypriot area.
Although the borders between the two halves of the island are open, the two regions are separate from a traveler's point of view.
This article will concentrate on the northern half known as the Turkish Republic Northern Cyprus (TRNC). This is not a political endorsement of claims by either side in the dispute.

Tourism to North Cyprus has always been possible, but in recent years, this half of the island has really begun to come into its own. It combines beautiful bays with long sandy beaches, especially towards the ‘panhandle’ or the Karpaz. This area of outstanding natural beauty boasts some of the island’s most deserted sandy beaches. Golden Beach, one of the world’s finest and longest beaches, is a highlight, with magnificent sands that stretch for more than 3 kilometres. The beach is fringed with sand dunes and it is here that Green and Leatherhead turtles come ashore and nest.
On Alagadi beach east of Kyrenia it is possible to join the conservation teams to watch the baby turtles hatch, under the watchful eye of teams of students who spend their summers here studying the turtles.
Offshore, the turtles mingle with a fantastic range of fish that draw divers from around the world. Swimming, snorkelling and other watersports can be enjoyed at many of the beach resorts.
The first 18 hole championship level golf course recently opened to the east of Kyrenia. The clubhouse is open to all, and has a spa for the non-players to enjoy, or simply sit on the terrace and have lunch whilst taking in the views of the sea to the front and mountains behind.
The Venetian harbour town of Girne (Kyrenia) in all its considerable beauty is perfect for whiling away an hour or two before exploring some of the many historical sites and ancient castles in the surrounding area.
Fishing excursions and sightseeing boat trips along the coast leave daily from the harbour.
The long northern coastline is backed by the Besparmak (Five Finger) Mountains with their dramatic wooded slopes and craggy summits. Hiking, walking and even paragliding is possible, but you do have to be aware of the restricted areas, which are well signposted.
With an average of 300 days sunshine, whether you choose leisurely sightseeing, relaxing on the beach, a spa break or an active sporting holiday, North Cyprus an ideal get-away for every season.
