Summary: All the help you will need in planning a trip, break or holiday in Egypt
Egypt, more fully known as the Arab Republic of Egypt, is a large country located in north-eastern Africa and extends into Asia by virtue of the Sinai Peninsula. Bordered by Israel to the north-east and to the east across the Red Sea by Saudi Arabia and Jordan. Sudan lies to the south and Libya to the west. The Mediterranean Sea is to the north but the whole country is dominated by the fertile valley of the River Nile and by the deserts found to the East and West.
Egypt is perhaps best known as the home of the ancient Egyptian civilization, and no trip to Egypt would be complete with out including a visit to the Pyramids at Giza, or a cruise along the River Nile and take in the sights of Luxor and the Valley of the Kings.
With its temples, museums, mummies, markets and mosques, and visible above all - its pyramids, Cairo is a feast for the senses. The three main pyramids at Giza are one of Egypt’s most visited monuments. The largest stands 449ft high (137m) and contains over three million stone blocks. It is possible to explore the interiors thanks to the many tunnels and staircases. The statue of the Sphinx, which has the body of a lion and the head of a woman stands alongside. Named by the ancient Greeks, the Sphinx is one of the most recognised statues in the world. It is possible to explore the site by donkey, horse or of course camel!
The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities in Cairo houses over 130,000 exhibits of ancient art and sculpture. The Mummy Room is always popular, and of course the celebrated Tutankhamun exhibition is housed here.
The Red Sea coastline is stunning and has some of the best dive sites in the world. The large resort of Sharm el-Sheikh is considered to be one of the best for diving, whilst on the west coast, the biggest diving resort is Hurghada. This was once a fishing village and now a major commercial tourist centre. At the southernmost point on the peninsula, is Ras Muhammed. Fringed with lagoons and reefs, it is now a national park.
Egypt excites the imagination of western tourists like few other countries and is probably one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world.
