Located in Northern Europe, Finland is the seventh largest country in Europe after Russia, Ukraine, France, Spain, Sweden and Germany. Sharing land borders with Sweden to the East, Norway to the North and Russia to the West, Finland has coastlines bordering the Baltic Sea, Gulf of Bothnia and the Gulf of Finland and some 2,859 miles (4,600 km) long. (684 miles or 1,100 km excluding inlets)
With an area of 130,558 sq. miles (338,144 sq km), the terrain is mostly low, flat rolling plains interspersed with over 188,000 lakes, which account for some 10% of the total area.
The capital of Helsinki is the northernmost national capital on the European continent, and home of the 1952 Olympic Games. The stadium is certainly worth a visit, and is easily accessible by foot from the city centre. A shoppers paradise, Helsinki has several malls many of which are linked via underground walkways. Helsinki is a popular port of call for the many Baltic cruise ships - well over 200 luxury cruise ships call in to its harbour every summer.
Finland is best known for its peace and beauty. Huge forests, a unique archipelago and thousands of lakes present a striking mixture at whatever time of year.
Shooting the rapids in spring and summer when the fast-flowing northern rivers are in full flood is an exciting way of seeing some of Finland’s more remote and spectacular landscapes not normally accessible.
During the summer, the waterways of lake, river and coastal areas offer pursuits such as canoeing, sailing and fishing. Cruising along the inlets can vary from short expeditions lasting a couple of hours to leisurely tours with on board accommodation lasting several days. The vessels range from quaint lake steamers to open-top motor cruisers ideal for sightseeing. Cyclists are also well catered for within the network of quiet and scenic coastal and country roads. Hiking, horse riding, Nordic Walking, the list goes on!
Few people may be surprised to discover that there are 107 golf courses in Finland. The golf season lasts from May until September, and with long summer days of 21 hours of daylight, queuing for a tee off time is not usually a problem! There are also far fewer players per course than many other golfing countries.
The Finnish winter landscape is a natural playground for every conceivable winter sport and activity. Cross country skiing, dog-sled safaris, snowshoe walking or snow-mobile safaris – even outdoor winter swimming – everything snow is catered for.
If you want to rest and recharge your batteries the endless forests provide the perfect retreat and a ready-made therapy for the stresses and strains of modern life, you’ve come to the right place. But if you are looking for a more active holiday, this is also the perfect destination, whether you opt for every conceivable form of winter sports, cycling, boating, fishing, hiking, art shows and performances, or simply sightseeing, Finland has it all.
