OVERVIEW: KENYA
Situated in East Africa, Kenya is a country of many faces. Kenya has some of the continents finest beaches and some of the most spectacular scenery ranging from the famous game reserves and savannah to the the summit of Mount Kenya. Rising over 16,300 ft (4,900 ms) above sea level, Mount Kenya is the second highest mountain in Africa and is surrounded by national parkland.
With an area of 582,646 sq km (224,961 sq miles), Kenya is bordered by Ethiopia to the North, Sudan to the North West, and Uganda in the West. The Indian Ocean coast lies between Tanzania to the South and Somalia to the North East.
The country is divided into four main regions: the arid deserts of the North, the lush fertile lowlands of the East coast, the savannah lands of the South and highlands in the West, where the capital Nairobi is situated.
The Great Rift Valley runs North West of the capital, Nairobi. The Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage is located on the edge of Nairobi National Park. A sanctuary where abandoned or orphaned elephants are hand reared until they are old enough to be released back into the wild.
With one tenth of all land in Kenya designated as national parkland, Kenya is a place for safaris and has some of the world’s best game reserves. There are over 50 different reserves or parks across a wide variation of landscape, from mountain and forests to desert and plains. These are famous for their abundant and accessible wildlife: lions, elephants and giraffe can be seen, not forgetting the many different species of antelope and huge herds of zebra, buffalo and wildebeest and just about every African plains animal you can imagine.
The annual wildebeest migration from the Masaai Mara to the Serengeti is an unforgettable sight which can be fully appreciated on a balloon safari.
Kenya also is a great destination for beach holidays and has some of the world's most beautiful beaches, located along the coastal regions and the city of Mombasa. In keeping with it’s theme of national parks and reserves, there are even six marine parks along the Indian Ocean coastline.
The famous 6 mile long Diani Beach is just 24 miles (40km) south of Mombasa. Watersports of all types, diving, snorkeling, surfing, swimming and waterskiing can be enjoyed on Kenya’s Coral Coast. Deep sea fishing is at its best along the coast between July and April. Sailfish, marlin, swordfish, kingfish, barracuda and tuna are all plentiful.
Golfing holidays in Kenya are becoming more popular with many beautiful courses opening around the major urban areas.
For those in search of a little adventure, Kenya can be an ideal holiday destination.
