OVERVIEW: MALDIVES

The Maldives is a chain of 1190 tropical coral islands scattered across the Indian Ocean southwest of Sri Lanka and close to the Equator. The islands of the Maldives have a combined coastline that measures 644km (430 miles), the majority of which are fringed by pristine white sand beaches. Divided into 26 atolls around coral reefs and lagoons, only 201 of the islands are inhabited. A further 87 islands are given over to resorts each with individual charm and character.

These picture perfect islands boast beautiful white sandy beaches and clear lagoons surrounded by coral reefs. With so many to choose from the resort islands never feel crowded enabling visitors to experience their own Robinson Crusoe moment.

The underwater world of coral reefs full of colourful fish awaits snorkellers and divers. Each of the resort islands have their own dive school, usually a short walk from your holiday bungalow. Conditions are ideal, with visibility up to 30 meters and an average water temperature of 28 degrees Celsius. The crystal clear waters also make the Maldives the perfect place for holidaymaker's to indulge in other watersports, from canoeing to windsurfing.
Deep-sea fishing, scuba diving and snorkeling excursions, as well as island hopping trips, are organised by the majority of resorts. Organised visits to the capital Malé and other inhabited islands are also popular.

The Maldives is a popular destination for weddings and honeymooners, where you can choose from a number of options for your special day. Exchange your vows in the hotel, under a canopy on the beach, on a boat or even underwater!

Many of the resorts are family orientated and boast all the usual resort facilities including child-friendly restaurants, swimming pools, and organised activities and sports facilities. Miles of unspoiled beaches, a wide variety of watersports and the calm sea are also big hits with kids of all ages, as are island-hopping excursions.

Nightlife is generally limited although some resorts may have live music or a disco.

Many of the resort hotels also boast spa facilities where facials, massages and body wraps are guaranteed to remove the last traces of stress and tension that everyday life brings. Yoga, Ayurveda treatments, heat and water therapies are all on offer and the location of the spa is second to none.

So whether you want to get active in the Indian Ocean, or just simply relax and unwind in some of the world's most beautiful scenery then the Maldives are for you.
