Summary: All the help you will need in planning a trip, break or holiday in Mexico
Mexico is a country in Central America, lying between the United States of America to the north, and Guatemala and Belize to the southeast. Its coastlines stretch some 6,000 miles and include the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west.
With an area of 758,449 sq miles (1,959,248 sq km) its landscapes range from arid desert in the northwest, jungle and rainforest in the southeast, to the snowy mountains of the Sierras. Over half the country is at an altitude greater than 3,300 ft (1,000m).
The southern area is crossed by a range of volcanic mountains running from Cape Corrientes in the west through the Valley of Mexico to Veracruz in the east, and includes the magnificent volcanoes of Nevado de Toluca and Popocatepetl. Here you can climb the high volcanic peaks and even go diving in the craters.
Many coastal resorts offer a whole range of watersports, from jet-skiing and windsurfing, sea kayaking and parasailing. The unusual cave structures found around the coast at Chital or La Bandera make these popular dive destinations. The breakers on the Pacific coast are great for surfing. The reefs around the Yucatan Peninsula are alive with sea creatures, great and small. Elephant seals and Grey Whales can be seen during the breeding season, as they return year after year to give birth.
There are lots of golf courses throughout the country, and as you would expect from such an extensive coastline excellent fishing, diving, snorkelling and sailing is easy to find.
Ancient archeology, pyramids and museums can be found throughout the country as can the modern architecture and 21st century cities. Mexico has countless hot springs and many spa resorts have sprung up around them. Used since ancient times, these are as popular today as in the days of the Aztecs.
With some of the world’s top destinations like Acapulco, Cancun, Cozumel, and the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico is one of the most popular tourist destinations on earth with over 20 million foreign visitors last year, and is ranked 8th for tourism according to the WTO. Much of the tourist industry is centered on the beach resorts, but for the more adventurous visitor, a trip in to the northern interior gives a chance to get off the beaten track.
