Getting around in North Cyprus

Car Hire

Unless you have booked a complete package holiday with lots of day trips included, or are just happy to spend your whole holiday in one place, you are likely to want to get out and about and actually explore some of the surrounding areas.

Although organized tours may very well give you the chance to get a flavour of what’s out there, they are generally on a tight timescale with a given itinerary. For first time visitors, being escorted around the various sites and provided with information and facts not to mention photo opportunities is not to be dismissed.
However, if you prefer to manage your own time maybe to watch the fishermen bringing in their catch in the harbour, or taking the time to appreciate the atmosphere of the market or just sitting watching the world go by in a café, hiring a car is without doubt the best way to achieve this. The freedom to go where you want and more importantly when you want is very liberating.

Most car hire companies will not hire out to under 25s. While this age limit is a preference and not compulsory, some insurance companies will not insure drivers that are under the age of 25, so most car hire companies go along with this rule.
A full drivers license will be needed, and will only be valid for 3 months from your date of entry into North Cyprus. Both the photocard and paper elements will be required, so make sure you take both!

Some Important facts to bear in mind when considering car hire

  • Traffic in Northern Cyprus flows on the left side.
  • Speed limits are in km/h.
  • Speed cameras and police radar checkpoints are common.
  • Front seat passengers are required to wear seatbelts.
  • Children are not allowed to sit in the front passenger seat.
  • Do not use a cell (mobile) phone while driving.
  • Do not drink and drive.

Hire cars can not be taken across the border to the South of the island, so if you intend travelling to the south during your stay you will have to find an alternate means of transport. There are many places where you can park your car and then walk across the border, and either pick up a taxi or even a hire car for the duration of your stay.

Taxis are plentiful and relatively cheap, but make sure you use a licensed taxi. Alternatively, travel like a local and catch one of the numerous Mini buses (‘Dolmush’). Services are available between 06:30am to 06:30pm.
