Summary: All the help you will need in planning a trip, break or holiday in Portugal

OVERVIEW: PORTUGAL

Portugal shares the Iberian peninsula with it’s only neighbour, Spain. The Atlantic Ocean forms the other boundary to the West and South.

Running North-South along the western coastline of the Iberian peninsula, and covering an area of 35,655 sq miles (92,325 sq km) the landscape is spectacular and encompasses everything from beach and virtual desert to lush rolling hills and rocky mountains.

Near the Spanish border is Peneda-Geres, Portugal’s national park. Here you can hike, climb and canoe through 179,000 acres of mountainous countryside.

Surrounded by sea in almost its entirety, Portugal is blessed with some fine beaches that are well worth visiting. A wide variety of activities are available from the many water sports centres found along the coast such Surfing, windsurfing, diving, snorkeling, waterskiing or sailing. During the summer months some of the busier beaches also offer sand based activities such as aerobics if the sunbathing gets too boring!

The most popular beaches in Portugal are found to the south in the Algarve, which has stunning coastlines, natural beauty and fabulous sandy beaches. The sea tends to be warmer and calmer here than along the west coast. The west coast is great for surfing due to the westerly winds that come off the Atlantic.
Portugal Port Cellar
Golf in Portugal is increasingly popular. The investment in recent years into the golfing infrastructure has led to a huge number of courses springing up, especially in the Algarve region. (There are 19 golf courses in the Algarve region alone) Named Best Golf destination 2006 by a recent poll of readers of Britain’s Golfers Today magazine, 14 of Portugal’s courses are in the top 100 best courses in Europe. Most courses offer lessons with a pro, whilst the more proficient player will not be disappointed by the variation of courses on offer, and the chance to improve their game surrounded by beautiful views. The country’s oldest golf club is Quinta de Marinha in Estoril.

The capital city of Lisbon is home to many beautiful monuments and remarkable views. Surrounded by seven hills, the highest of them is topped by the magnificent 12th century Castle of St George.

From cycling holidays through the mountainous terrain or white-water rafting down raging rivers, Portugal can offer much more than the usual beach holiday.
