Summary: Information on River Cruising
River Cruising is a great way to enjoy a wide variety of destinations on the same holiday without all the hassle of packing and unpacking and checking in and out of hotels. Your ship becomes a floating hotel, effortlessly taking you to different locations as you relax and enjoy the changing scenery.
Once on board your cruise ship, you can unpack and relax knowing that the bags can be safely stowed until your final departure. And unlike some city coach tours, there is no traffic to contend with, no boring motorways and no lugging bags on and off the coach. The views whilst travelling between stops are usually much nicer too!
As a way of visiting some of the Europe’s most beautiful cities, river cruising is ideal. Many cities have developed along waterways, making them easily accessible to the river cruise ships, which tend to be much smaller that the larger ocean cruisers that many people are familiar with. This brings many advantages – there are fewer guests so it is easier to meet new people and make new friends; embarking and disembarking at each stop takes less time and when visiting a smaller town, the place is not overwhelmed by numbers.
River cruise ships generally moor in the centre of the city or town and usually offer additional/optional guided tours and excursions in each destination. If you prefer to do your own thing there is plenty of time to wander round and enjoy the sights and sounds in an unhurried way. Make sure you bring comfortable walking shoes and casual clothing for onshore exploration.
Life on board is generally less formal than people expect – if you ask most people who have never experienced a cruise the most common misconception is the idea of clothing and ‘dressing for dinner’. Whilst it is important to have the right attire, casual is the order of the day, and for dinner generally smart casual is fine. Welcome and farewell dinners are perhaps dressier but not formal – suits and ties are generally not required. Most ships don’t have a fixed seating plan giving you the opportunity to meet many more of your fellow passengers, but it’s always worth checking with the tour company before booking.
On board entertainment will vary depending on the size of the ship and operator, but most will have some. Depending on your itinerary there may be lectures on the cities you are visiting to help you get the most of your time there, or perhaps local musicians from the port where you are docked for the night.
River cruising is one of the fasted growing areas in the tourist industry, attracting both experienced and first time travellers. Many offer all-inclusive cruises, so you know exactly what your holiday is going cost – but don’t forget to bring spending money for all those on shore shops, trips and treats!
