OVERVIEW: SEYCHELLES

The Seychelles consists of around 115 coral and granite islands located some 1600km from the east coast of Africa in the western Indian Ocean. The total land area of this beautiful archipelago is some 455 square kms, is home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites and is rightly famed for its many world beating beaches.

The islands fall into two distinct groups, the Inner Islands and the Outer Islands.

The Inner Islands are home to the majority of the population, with the principal islands of Mahe, Parslin and La Digue forming the cultural and economic hub of the Seychelles. Most of the tourist accommodation is found in these islands. There are 43 Inner Islands in total, 41 granite and 2 coralline. These are the oldest mid-oceanic granite islands found on earth.

The Outer Islands consist of 72 and are mainly low-lying coralline cays, atolls and reef islands. Divided into five groups, they lie mainly beyond the Seychelles plateau: the Amirantes group some 230km from Mahe, the Southern Coral Group, Alphonse Group, Farquhar Group and finally the Aldabra Group, some 1150km from Mahe.

Less visited than the Inner Islands due to their relative remoteness, these are pristine miniature worlds. Some are little more than sandy spits or lonely rocky outcrops, and offer untouched habitats for many species of wildlife.

Only two islands among the Outer Island groups, namely Alphonse and Desroches in the Amirantes group, currently have accommodation facilities. Boasting luxuriously appointed lodges, there are opportunities for sailing, fishing and diving in places where few have gone before.

A holiday in the Seychelles can be enhanced by island-hopping between the 16 islands that currently offer accommodation. From luxurious 5-star resorts to rustic island lodges and cosy beachside bungalows, why not try something a little different?
Diving, sailing, fishing and all types of water based activities are catered for, including excursion in a glass bottomed boat to view the coral reefs from above. There's also golf, horse-riding and guided nature tours where you can see some of the rarest species of flora and fauna on earth. The mellow Seychelles nightlife does not disappoint, you can take in a casino, enjoy the local bars or fine restaurants that offer wonderful Creole and international cuisine.

As the Seychelles islands enjoy a year round warm tropical climate it is always a good time to visit.
