Summary: How to get the most from your city or short break

City and Short Breaks

There are a couple of ways of tackling a short city break – the first is to rush around and try to see as many ‘sights’ as humanly possible in your allotted time before falling back exhausted into your seat for the journey home.

The second is to plan to visit just one or two of the main attractions and give yourself time to fully appreciate what you see and to soak up some of the atmosphere in a relaxed, unhurried way.

Start by choosing your destination, then decide how long you want to take your break over. If possible make your travel arrangements fit into your timescales, rather than the other way around. For example, an early flight will allow you spend a whole day in your chosen destination without the additional cost of an ‘extra’ night’s accommodation. Most hotels will allow you to store luggage until check in time, so you won’t have to drag your bags around with you on your arrival day. The same applies on the return journey – a late flight gives you the majority of your last day to enjoy to the full. Again, most hotels will keep your luggage after check out until you are ready to return to the airport.

Try book a hotel as near to the main attractions as your budget allows. This way you can enjoy a leisurely start to your day and not feel the need to get up at the crack of dawn to travel to the chosen venue. You are on holiday after all!

Do a little bit of homework before you depart – a city guide book is a must have item to narrow down the places you most wish to see.

Plan your route and check the opening times and days of the gallery/museum/site. If you haven’t already, check out the ‘how to get there’ before leaving your hotel – most hotels will have guides for the metro/buses/trains with the main tourist attractions marked.

Many of the major cities operate ‘Hop on Hop off’ open top tour buses with regular departures throughout the day. These are a wonderful way to get an overview of all the points of interest and offer a cost effective alternative to taxis, buses or trains. Unless there is a guide on board, a recorded guide is usually available, and headphones can generally be purchased on board. Most daily tickets usually allow passengers to get off and on at fixed points on the route, with enough time to enjoy your chosen sights between buses.

Of course, nothing beats walking to really get to the heart of a city, but can be hard on the feet! Be prepared and always wear comfortable shoes so as not to spoil your wanderings!

Last but not least, don’t forget your camera! Ensure you have enough spare films/batteries/memory to capture every moment of your short break.
