Summary: Hints and Tips on taking your holiday at home
A new term has entered the vocabulary recently as a result of the credit crunch – the ‘Staycation’. Literally holidaying at home! It is possible to have a break based around your own home without the extra costs and upheaval of packing for a holiday.
Planning is the key in this instance, after all you don’t want to spend your break from work doing nothing – or worse doing housework! Whether it’s a day trip to the seaside, a picnic in the park or just visiting family or friends for the day, anything that outside your normal routine can be rewarding.
Set a budget for your time off. You can then decide whether to go out every day, or blow some of the funds on a more extravagant trip to a theme park for example.
If you are planning an away day on the train (or coach), investigate whether a rail card would save you on the fares. Although there is usually an initial cost for the rail card, this can often be offset by the number of journeys you may make during your holiday. Plus of course they are generally valid for a year, meaning further travel for away days or mini breaks could be taken during that time.
If monetary restraints make it impossible to get away at all, there are so many things you can do that are free! Why not spoil yourself with a good book (from the library) and spend it in the garden – weather permitting of course! Or sort through and organise all your photos – one of those jobs most people never get around too! And it’s a great way for children to find out about their extended families too. Or bake a cake and have a picnic in your garden. Invite your friends and their children round, and ask everyone to bring something to eat or drink, thereby spreading the burden of providing all the food.
