Summary: All the help you will need in planning a trip, break or holiday in Thailand
Located in South East Asia, Thailand has land boundaries with Burma to the North West, Laos to the North East, Cambodia to the South East and Malaysia to the South. Thailand has a coastline that stretches some 3,219 kms. The longest coastline is that bordering the Gulf of Thailand, with a shorter coastline to the West and the Andaman Sea.
Thailand is a popular destination and is visited by millions of tourists every year and appeals to every type of traveller. Despite the devasting tsunami of December 2004, tourism is increasing year on year.
Thailand is well known for its diversity for sightseeing and travel opportunities. Thailand has some of the worlds most beautiful beaches, plus dozens of temples and palaces, vibrant resort towns or rural settlements or national parks, and even meditation centres where you can attend a class for a day or a retreat lasting several weeks, the choice is limitless.
The area around the nation's capital, Bangkok, has plenty of attractions for the visitor to Thailand. Try a boat trip along the klongs, a vast network of canals that lead off the river. Lined with dwellings that open directly onto the water, or though the Floating Market in Bangkok. Or dive with sharks in the aquarium at Siam Ocean World. The Oriental Hotel in Bangkok is one of the most famous in the world, where you can do some celebrity spotting while enjoying afternoon tea. Something that shouldn’t be missed is a visit to Wat Pho the oldest and largest in Bangkok and home to the Reclining Buddha. The statue of the Buddha's statue is enormous at 46m (150ft) long and 15m (49ft) high.
To the North is Chiang Mai, the second largest city in Thailand. Chang Mai has in excess of 300 temples and is surrounded by beautiful countryside, and is an excellent base if you intend to explore the north. The north is also home to the area known as the Golden Triangle, the region where Burma, Laos and Thailand meet.
For the environmentally aware tourist, eco-tourism flourishes, with trekking on foot or elephant back, 4-wheel drive safaris, mountain biking, whitewater rafting, and meeting with remote highland communities. The blue waters of the extensive coastline beckon those who prefer their holiday to be water based, whether you wish to indulge in the relaxing beach life or diving, sailing, windsurfing, sea canoeing and kayaking.
Accommodation styles cover every range, from high-end luxury resort style hotels to guest houses and self catering options for the budget traveller. Thailand offers a wealth of choice for every taste and pocket, both on the mainland and the islands.
Thailand is rightly famous for it’s many islands, found both in the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand.
Phuket is the largest, llocated in the Andaman Sea 885km from Bangkok, it is also known as the "Pearl of the South". Tropical vegetation, long sandy beaches, limestone cliffs and forested hills make Phuket fantastic holiday destination. Although the tourist industry is well developed, it has been well thought out so as not to impinge on the natural beauty, and it is still possible to find some fairly remote and secluded areas.
Samui Island is located in the Gulf of Thailand, some 20km from the mainland and about 600km south of Bangkok and is Thailand's third largest island. In recent years tourism has increased significantly, not least of all due the magnificent scenery, and excellent facilities.
Some of the other well known islands in Thailand include Ko Phi Phi, Ko Pha Ngan, Ko Tao and Ko Samet.
NB: A state of emergency was declared in Bangkok on 2 September 2008. Those with plans to travel to thailand and especially Bangkok, should keep informed of developments. There is a high threat from terrorism throughout Thailand. Attacks could be indiscriminate and against civilian targets in public places including those places frequented by foreigners. As the situation can change rapidly, visitors are advised to contact the Foreign Office for the latest travel advice. Be aware that should travel to thailand not be recommended, your travel insurance may be invalid. Check with your insurers before you book or travel.
