Summary: Here are our Top Ten tips for Travellers

Travellers' checklist

To ensure your holiday goes without incident, here are the top 10 things to do before you go:

  1. Get Travel Insurance: No-one plans to have an accident or lose their possessions, but it’s the most important thing to have. Ensure the cover is appropriate for your trip. NB: Check that your destination country is NOT on the Foreign Office list of countries where travel is not advised – your insurance may not be valid!
  2. Ensure your Passport is valid and covers the duration of your holiday. Many destinations require a passport to be valid for 6 months beyond your return date.
  3. Check with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office for latest travel advice to any countries you intend visiting. (FCO: 0845 850 2829)
  4. Check whether a Visa is required for your destination: Don’t leave this until the last minute in case of delays in issuing paperwork.
  5. Visit your GP to arrange any vaccinations: Do this at least six weeks before your departure date as some vaccinations need to be done some time before you travel. He should also be able to advise whether any extra health precautions are necessary.
  6. Get a Guide Book: A good guide book will help you get to know your destination, and should include information about local laws and customs.
  7. Find out whether your travel company has a policy to bring you home if things go wrong. Some tour operators and airlines have recently folded due the economic climate, leaving hundreds of holidaymakers stranded abroad. Check whether the company is backed by an organisation that offers financial protection.
  8. Take sufficient money for your trip: Having back up funds is also a good idea. Take Travellers cheques in sterling or US dollars for emergencies. A credit or debit card with ATM access is another useful option (if there are ATMs around of course!)
  9. Copy your passport and other documents: Include the emergency numbers of your travel insurance company. Leave these with family or friends.
  10. Leave a copy of your itinerary with family or friends: Include a way of contacting you such as an email address.

The Foreign Office website is a good source of information for specific travel advice for women, gay and lesbian travellers, young travellers, sports travellers and backpackers.
